Does Concrete Need to Be Sealed? I admittedly was unaware of all things home maintenance until I actually owned a home. Growing up, my neighbor was meticulous about maintaining his property perfectly. Whether it was sweeping sidewalks, mowing the lawn, trimming the bushes or a number of other outdoor projects, he was outside nearly every night doing something. One thing that he did every four months was reseal his concrete walkway and driveway. At the time it seems pretty extreme to me (my parents were more on the once a year path), but now I understand the importance of concrete sealing. Concrete is a strong material that can stand up to a lot of use, but it is also a very porous material that requires sealant to last. Whether it is oil or water, concrete sucks it up when it is not properly sealed. Oil will settle in the concrete and stain your walkway or driveway. Moisture settles in concrete as well and can damage the integrity of the material, especially in colder climates. When the moisture freezes, it expands and cracks the concrete. 
When my husband bought our current home, the concrete patio in the backyard was in bad shape. Knowing what I know now, I’m sure it was because the concrete wasn’t sealed properly on a regular basis, allowing moisture and dirt to settle and expand within its pores until it started to crumble. Sealing concrete is an important component of outdoor maintenance. Depending on the area, the concrete should be cleaned and sealed once a year on average. Before sealing it, the concrete should be thoroughly cleaned and given time to dry. If it isn’t dry, moisture may be locked in when sealed and cause damage as it expands and contracts.
